With Special Guest Katherine Ann Power, author of Surrender: My Journey from Guerrilla to Grandmother

Intersecting Paths of Micah and Katherine

Synchronicities in life hinted at Micah’s memoir-writing path, none more serendipitous than his encounter with Katherine Power. Fate wove their paths together thirty years ago at Micah’s coffeehouse in Corvallis, Oregon, where the fugitive Katherine worked as a chef while negotiating her surrender to authorities after being on the run for 23 years, 14 of which were on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.

While their paths were wildly different in so many ways, they both had the thread of identity woven through their journeys in significant ways: one seeking it, the other fleeing it.

Micah and Katherine have unearthed their versions of serenity and now seek to illuminate the path for others by sharing their stories.

Katherine published her memoir, Surrender: My Journey from Guerrilla to Grandmother in October 2023. Micah is finishing the audiobook version of his memoir, Stumbling Into Grace: The Adventures of a Transgender Shaman, and will be publishing soon.

What is a Memoir and why write yours?

Hello, this is Micah!

A few years ago, I listened to author Elizabeth Gilbert’s (Eat, Pray, Love) podcast “Magic Lessons” where she interviewed a novice memoir writer.

Two things stood out for me during the conversation.

One was what a memoir is versus an autobiography.

An autobiography is a historical account of a person’s life, relying on facts and data, and typically spans the entire lifetime.

A memoir is less formal, narrower in scope or timeline, is written in first-person point of view, and shares a story or series of stories that changed your life and can potentially transform your readers. A memoir uses feeling and memories, as well as facts, and has flexibility about choosing what to highlight.

An autobiography is informational writing; a memoir is transformational writing!

Why Write Your Memoir?

The other thing that stood out in Gilbert’s podcast were the reasons to write your memoir:

✓ Preserving Personal History: Writing a memoir allows you to document your life experiences, preserving your personal history for yourself, your loved ones, and future generations.

✓ Self-Reflection and Growth: Reflecting on your life can be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-discovery. Writing a memoir causes you to delve into your past, confront your experiences, and gain insights that can lead to personal growth and understanding.

✓ Sharing Wisdom and Lessons Learned: Memoirs often contain valuable lessons and insights gleaned from life experiences. By sharing your stories, you can impart wisdom to others, offering guidance, inspiration, and comfort.

✓ Connecting with Others: Memoirs have the power to resonate with readers on a deeply personal level. By sharing your struggles, triumphs, and emotions, you connect with readers who have had similar experiences, fostering empathy, understanding, and a sense of community.

✓ Catharsis and Healing: Writing about past traumas or difficult experiences can be a cathartic process, allowing you to confront and make sense of your emotions, and ultimately, find healing and closure.

✓ Creative Expression: Crafting a memoir is a form of creative expression. It allows you to explore different writing styles, techniques, and narrative structures while telling your unique story.

✓ Leaving a Legacy: A memoir can serve as a lasting legacy, allowing you to leave behind a piece of yourself for future generations to remember you by.

Ultimately, the reasons for writing a memoir are as varied as the individuals who choose to write one. Whether for personal growth, self-expression, or to leave a mark on the world, writing a memoir can be a deeply meaningful and rewarding experience.

Classes will be Tuesdays, May 28th throuh June 25th at 3:00 p.m. Eastern time. All calls will be recorded!

The Investment for Writing a Book

Before I get to the investment, let me share some numbers from the industry. If you hire a writing coach one-on-one, the coaching fees will typically range from $600-$1200 per month. A memoir on average takes about a year to complete. If you were to work with a coach, the investment might reach $12,000-$24,000 for the year. If you’re just getting started as a writer, that’s a lot of money.

That’s why we developed this memoir-writing journey — to help writers get their juices flowing and their words pouring out for much, much less.

…..work every step of the way with coaches and mentors who have written their memoirs
